When it comes to balancing hormones, most people look outside themselves.
Supplements. Medications. Special diets. Lab work. All can certainly help when used appropriately.
Still, many struggle even after getting all the lab work, taking supplements or medications, and going on that special diet.
Let me ask a simple, powerful question:
What if your thoughts could be disrupting your hormones, too?
SPOILER ALERT: They certainly can.
But once you understand how thoughts affect your hormones… you can start shifting things in a powerful way — much more powerful than you can imagine.
The Science of Thought-Hormone Connection
Your hormonal system—also called the endocrine system—is how your body changes what it’s doing.
✅ Increased immune function? There’s a hormone for that.
✅ More mental focus? There’s a hormone for that.
✅ Faster metabolism? There’s a hormone for that.
✅ More restful sleep? There’s a hormone for that.
But what tells all those hormones to stop or go? What is the central source of information that determines how much — or little — of those hormones need to be present at any given time?
Two words: Your brain.
It is your brain that sends the messages to all your glands and tissues telling them what hormones to make more of and which to make less of. This puts your brain in a very powerful position.
And there’s something else your brain does that is very important: It perceives your environment via sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.
A big part of your brain’s job is to take all the information and align your internal state with your external state. For instance, if you’re hungry and you smell someone grilling chicken or baking cookies, your brain begins adjusting your metabolism, your gut motility, and might even make you salivate. All those changes are initiated by hormones.
Or, if you’re hiking in the woods and suddenly see a bear close by, your brain begins telling your adrenals to pump out adrenaline, and gets you ready for “fight or flight”. It kicks all that off using–you guessed it–hormones.
But, here’s a funny thing about our brains. They can get out of sync with the external world, and start having their own ideas about what is going on, then start making hormones to match a non-existent state of affairs.
When your thoughts are constantly looping around fear, pressure, comparison, or self-criticism–even when there’s nothing going on around you (or certainly nothing dangerous or scary)–your brain still perceives a threat.
Whether the threat is a tiger chasing you or a harsh inner voice whispering “You’re a failure.” or a worry that never materializes, it reacts the same way:
⚠️ Increased cortisol
⚠️ Disrupted sleep cycles
⚠️ Reduced thyroid output
⚠️ Diminished sex hormone production
⚠️ Compromised digestion and blood sugar balance
In short—your body prepares for danger even if it is all in your head.
That’s because every thought is translated into a biochemical message that aligns your biology with the feeling behind it.
Your Inner Narrator and Hormonal Chaos (or Harmony)
We all have an internal narrator—a voice that quietly tells the story of who we are and what’s happening.
For many struggling with hormone issues, this story sounds like:
“Something must be wrong with me.”
- “What happens if I fail at [X]?”
“Why can’t I just feel better?”
“This is just how it is after 40 (or 50 or 60). Things will just keep getting worse.”
“I’ve tried everything and nothing works. Maybe there’s no hope.”
Those thoughts aren’t just scary and discouraging. They’re telling the brain: “You’re not safe. Worry. Panic. Brace for impact.”
And the body responds accordingly with hormones that produce more tension, more inflammation, more instability, and… more stress.
But here’s the beautiful part. You can break this “cycle of doom”, as I like to call it. And, all you have to do is:
Change your story.
Reclaiming Mental Supremacy (And Stabilizing Your Hormones)
Start small. Begin by noticing how you talk to yourself—both out loud and in your head.
Are your thoughts kind, supportive, and affirming? Or are they hurtful, judgmental, and self-negating?
The former shift your biology away from stress hormones that constrict, inflame, and deplete your body.
The latter? These thoughts are like chains that bind you to those stress hormones and never let go.
A lot of people feel like “positive thinking” is denial or, worse, dishonesty. But, here’s the truth:
Replacing gnawing regret with gratitude and forgiveness is not lying to yourself. It’s aligning yourself with a profound and powerful truth:
Your body’s default is not dysfunction, it is completion (healing). Every single moment of your life it is ready to heal even what seems to be an un-fixable condition.
Changing your story from one of regret, shame, fear, guilt, anger, or sadness to one of hope, gratitude, acceptance, forgiveness, and joy unlocks this profound healing power within you.
Not by force, but by alignment. It’s like going from the exhausting effort of swimming against the current to the relaxed ease of swimming with it. And, when you do this not only do things become easier for your body, you heal faster with less effort and virtually no struggle.
Three Thought Habits That Support Hormonal Balance
1. Affirm that you are safe.
Your hormones stabilize when your brain feels safe.
That means consciously replacing anxious, worst-case thoughts with calming ones like:
“I’m supported.”
“There’s a path forward.”
“My body knows how to heal.”
These thoughts send a powerful signal: “We’re safe and we’re going to stay safe.” And that helps your body switch out of survival mode.
2. Hopeful visualization
What you imagine, your body rehearses.
When you picture yourself feeling good, free of symptoms, and living with joy and purpose…
You’re literally reinforcing the neural and hormonal pathways that cause that reality to emerge.
Just 60 seconds of visualizing how you want to feel—daily—can shift both your mood and your chemistry in real, measurable ways.
3. Self-kindness as daily medicine
This one’s simple as they come.
Be kind to yourself. All the time.
Most people instinctively turn to harshness when they aren’t performing up to their standards:
“Get it together.”
“Don’t be lazy.”
“Is this all you’ve got?”
But that only raises stress hormones further.
Try gentleness instead:
“Of course you’re tired. You’ve been doing a lot.”
“This will pass. Let’s take care of ourselves today.”
“That’s enough for today. Great job!”
Kindness is strength, not weakness. And, in my view, it is our MOST powerful self-help tool for every kind of problem. Including hormonal imbalance.
That’s because how we see ourselves is how we treat ourselves. And, more than anything else, how we treat ourselves determines how we feel.
This Isn’t Woo—It’s Hormonal Wisdom
You might be wondering: can your thoughts really influence your hormones?
Yes.
And not just in theory.
It’s biology.
Because your brain is the master regulator of your entire endocrine system.
And your thoughts are what feed your brain its marching orders.
“When your thoughts shift from threat to trust, your hormones shift from chaos to calm.”
This doesn’t mean you have to think perfectly. It just means you start thinking deliberately.
Replace thoughts that create fear, worry, and hopelessness with their opposite. It’s not “lying to yourself”, it’s simply changing the story.
Final Thoughts
Your thoughts are free. You can change them anytime. And when you do, your body will begin to change, too.
Your hormones are listening. What do you want them to hear?
Ready for real, lasting hormonal balance?
If your hormones feel out of control and nothing seems to help…
It might be time to approach the problem differently.
