Because I was older than 35, my OB-GYN wanted us to begin testing for possible infertility after six months, but we spread it out a little bit longer. After completing blood tests, HSG and semen analysis, nothing indicated why we had not been successful. We decided to do IUI as this was the most “natural” form of insemination. The first round was not successful, so we scheduled a second round for the next cycle. In the meantime, I decided to try acupuncture due to reading other testimonials about the successful outcomes at The Axelrad Clinic. I am not exactly sure how long I met with Chris, but I don’t think it was more than an entire cycle before I got pregnant. I believe that the theory behind acupuncture, treating the whole body, is what was required to get my system in sync. I have recommended acupuncture to friends who have had trouble conceiving and they have also experienced success."

I wanted to share some exciting news with you since you have been a major part of this journey. We are pregnant!! What a blessing!!
Back in April, after 3 failed medicated cycles, recommended that we pursue IVF. In May I went to visit you and you gave me herbs to prepare me for IVF.
Well, to our big surprise, we conceived naturally and I am 9 wks pregnant today! Everything looks good, we have a strong heartbeat, baby is growing and developing and we are praying for the best!

Hi Chris! I started noticing a change within 24 hours. The bleeding stopped pretty quickly, I’m still spotting occasionally and cramping but overall much better! Hope you had a great weekend, ours was very successful! We retrieved 27 eggs on Friday and got a call on Saturday that we made 18 embryos! We were over joyed with the great news and are feeling so very blessed.

I left the appointment with a treatment plan that included recommended supplements, tips on nutrition and general recommendations to help me with my goal of getting pregnant. At my second appointment with Chris, I told him that I was experiencing symptoms that I hadn’t experienced since my first pregnancy and that I thought I might be pregnant. My fertility doctor confirmed my pregnancy the following day. I continued to see Chris and Jaime weekly until I reached 12 weeks. I am now seeing them monthly until I reach 36 weeks, and then will see them weekly until I (hopefully!) deliver a healthy baby. As someone who has experienced pregnancy loss, those first 12 weeks were especially terrifying. I was so grateful for my weekly appointments with Chris and Jaime. In those appointments, they patiently listened to my concerns and followed up on concerns I had expressed the previous week. I always left my appointments feeling relaxed and reassured. On one occasion, I came into my appointment extremely concerned with some cramping. I told Jaime that I had a doctor’s appointment in two days where we would have an ultrasound. I was so touched when I received an email in my inbox from Jaime three days later, asking how my doctor’s appointment went and checking to see if all was well. I am so very thankful to have Chris, Jaime and Caity as part of this journey and cannot recommend The Axelrad Clinic more. This is a truly amazing team!

My OBGYN suggested I see an acupuncturist for stress. So I started because I was desperate to have second child I figured even if it did not help i was certain it could not get worse. I was in a bad place; stressed out but in reality, I was immobilized by the grief. After the miscarriages, I went through 3 IUI (one led to a chemical pregnancy) and 2 full rounds of IVF. None of the procedures led to a viable pregnancy. During this time I would meet with Chris. I grew to appreciate acupuncture and identify its value to my body and mind. Chris and his entire staff were kind and attentive. Each time i was filled with disappointment, i could see they too felt some of my sadness. When I would stop coming because I had given up, they would call and check on me. Not to push appointments but to make sure I was okay. "I started working with Chris in the Spring of 2014. I was 36 years old, and my husband and I were struggling to conceive our second child. For about 2 years after my first child was born, I had also been struggling with severe insomnia. I met with Chris for the free consultation and immediately felt at ease about my situation. We discussed the insomnia as well, and Chris said he could help me with that. I had been taking Ambien almost every night to sleep, which Chris advised could be harming my fertility. He worked up a plan for me to gradually reduce my usage of the Ambien, and within 3 months I was totally off of it and sleeping great! Amazing. My RE had painted such a dismal picture of our situation, telling us we had a roughly 1% chance (perhaps less) of conceiving on our own due to my rising FSH and very low AMH levels. Chris reassured me and encouraged me to think positively about my outlook. I began weekly acupuncture treatments with Chris, and although I was very skeptical about all the needles at first, found that I felt so relaxed and at ease after the treatments. It was so nice to be able to lay calmly for those 20 minutes, letting my thoughts drift away. My husband and I did several IUI procedures with injectable medication, and unfortunately were not successful. One ended in miscarriage around 9 weeks. Throughout the failed cycles, and the miscarriage, Chris was there to calm me and reassure me that we would eventually have success. We decided to take a break from the fertility treatments and try on our own for a few months, and Chris started me on a regime of Chinese herbs in addition to the treatments. A few months later, it worked! I am currently almost 20 weeks pregnant with my second child, and all looks good so far. "I never thought I would face infertility. Thankfully I have an amazing fertility specialist who’s always had our best interests at heart. We were shocked and upset when IVF didn’t work the first time. My doctor wanted to make sure I knew about all of my options and referred me to Chris for acupuncture. Chris really focused on my overall wellbeing. He addressed my stress (what stress?!), how well I was (not) sleeping and my (lack of) energy. Chris is highly knowledgeable and very easy to talk to. After all the needle pokes of IVF I wasn’t too thrilled about more needles with acupuncture. That being said, you hardly feel them! It’s now super relaxing and I usually dooze off. I’m happy to say that after 2 rounds of IVF, including 4 embryo transfers, we’re expecting our miracle baby! I’m so grateful for my entire medical team, including Chris and The Axelrad Clinic. I used to come home from work, shower, eat, and just plop on the couch. Weekends were spent resting from the exhaustive week. I can now go out with friends after work and actually enjoy myself because I’m not exhausted. I’m engaged and present in a way I could not be before. The stress from my job has not changed, but how I handle it has. I am much more calm during stressful situations and have a better outlook. I’m so glad I decided on the Axelrad clinic. I have been going to the Axelrad clinic since I was 28 weeks pregnant. I was having severe SI joint pain in my lower back and nothing was really helping. A coworker recommended acupuncture which I had never done before, but I was willing to try anything at that point. I went and after the first appointment noticed a difference. After my second apt I had minimal pain and after the third none. I don't know how it works but it does! I have recommended multiple friends and coworkers now. I absolutely love Axelrad! I have been through 4 rounds of IVF and they are the most accommodating clinic full of the kindest people. The round I am currently in had my lining ant an 3.2 mm on Friday, I had Jaime do accupuncture and took the supplements she recommended, and my lining was up to a 7.3 by Tuesday! I could not imagine going through IVF without them, and they are the first thing/place I recommend to someone starting IVF.

The acupuncture sessions with Xiuming are amazing! It wasn’t my goal but I’ve lost 10 Lb because she had been targeting my digestive system, I won’t go into details but I feel less bloated now. She does an amazing gua sha session that leaves me with such a relaxed feeling that lasts for days, I know it has more health benefits than that but the feeling alone is just fantastic. We begin with a complimentary consultation to understand your concerns, review your health history, and answer your questions so you can determine if our care is the right fit for your needs.
Intake & First Treatment
At your intake appointment, your doctor will gather a more complete health picture, then create a customized treatment plan including treatment frequency, dietary guidance, supplements, and herbs precisely selected and properly dosed for optimal results. At this visit you will also receive your initial acupuncture treatment.
Active Care Phase
You’ll begin a series of regular treatments designed to address the root causes of your condition. During this phase, your doctor will closely monitor key markers of improvement and adjust your treatment plan as things progress.
Transitional Phase
Once we reach our goal, we begin reducing the frequency of visits while continuing to reinforce and stabilize your results.
Graduation

All our clinicians are Board Certified by the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine) and are licensed by the State Board of Acupuncture Examiners and Texas State Medical Board.
Additionally, all our clinicians have specialized training in Functional Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine via the 5-Element Functional Medicine Institute which was founded by our Director, Chris Axelrad, M.S.O.M., L.Ac.
Chris Axelrad also served for 4 years on the Executive Board of ABORM (The American and TCM Board of Reproductive Medicine), including 2 years as its president.
Do you accept insurance?
We are out of network and therefore do not directly bill insurance.
However, many of our patients easily receive reimbursement from their insurance on an out-of-network basis by filing directly with their insurance company. Upon request, we will gladly provide you with the documentation you need in order to do that.
Do you offer lab testing?
We can definitely help you get whatever lab tests you’re interested in.
However, we typically don’t need many tests, if any, and the ones we do use are fairly standard.
We have found through experience that by using the 5-Element Functional Medicine process developed by our Founder and Director, and focusing on simple, subtle symptomatic diagnostic parameters, we end up with incredibly accurate assessments and treatment plans.
It’s important to remember that your body knows how to fix itself and get itself back into balance. Our process is very precise and efficient at doing that. For instance, many of our patients who are on thyroid replacement end up needing less or can even stop their medicine after a period of time on their treatment plan. This is because not only is the thyroid now producing hormones more efficiently, the cells are also responding to the thyroid more effectively.
Where are you located?
We have 4 offices in the Greater Houston area, and a worldwide office on the internet. 😉
Is there a problem if I'm on medication or doing other conventional medical procedures?
Absolutely not. We are always here to support YOUR goals and YOUR decisions. If you choose to take medications prescribed by another doctor, we respect that choice. Same with the choice to do surgery, IVF, or any other conventional medical procedure.
Our goal is to help you be successful, no matter what YOU decide to do outside of our office (short of harming others or yourself, of course 😉 ).
How long are the office visits?
Your initial consultation usually takes no more than 15 minutes, with a brief “orientation” at the end where we’ll make sure you’re clear on everything before you set up your intake.
The total time for that appointment is about 30 minutes.
The intake appointment is roughly 60 – 75 minutes in length, including 25 minutes for the acupuncture treatment and about 15 minutes at the end to go over your treatment plan and book out some future appointments (we’re very busy so we always encourage you book at least a month in advance to be sure you get the days / times you want).
The follow-ups are typically around 35 – 45 minutes each, again with 25 minutes allocated to the treatment and the rest for consultation and check-out.
