I am happy to say that after a month, I felt much better and I had less pain from my period that month. The herbs they prescribed have really helped with fighting the inflammation that comes along with endometriosis as well as improving my overall mood. I have had acupuncture before from other clinics but never felt this way before! I also recently had some hormone testing done and results were fabulous! My AMH was 1.17 which was a great improvement from my previous result of 0.3. I attribute this to my acupuncture sessions. Chris is very knowledgeable and always encouraging. Just wanted to let the Axelrad team know that I had 21 eggs retrieved this IVF cycle! Just wanted to share the great results since this is my second IVF round and added acupuncture this time which resulted in 50% more eggs retrieved!

I thought jumping straight into Ivf was my only option but with his insight i realized i have some other less invasive options to try first. The moment i knew he was genuine is when he said “if we try this for 6 months and nothing happens then yes, go for ivf. “ it felt like he was willing to help me walk a journey i wanted instead of pushing his agenda.

"I started working with Chris in the Spring of 2014. I was 36 years old, and my husband and I were struggling to conceive our second child. For about 2 years after my first child was born, I had also been struggling with severe insomnia. I met with Chris for the free consultation and immediately felt at ease about my situation. We discussed the insomnia as well, and Chris said he could help me with that. I had been taking Ambien almost every night to sleep, which Chris advised could be harming my fertility. He worked up a plan for me to gradually reduce my usage of the Ambien, and within 3 months I was totally off of it and sleeping great! Amazing. My RE had painted such a dismal picture of our situation, telling us we had a roughly 1% chance (perhaps less) of conceiving on our own due to my rising FSH and very low AMH levels. Chris reassured me and encouraged me to think positively about my outlook. I began weekly acupuncture treatments with Chris, and although I was very skeptical about all the needles at first, found that I felt so relaxed and at ease after the treatments. It was so nice to be able to lay calmly for those 20 minutes, letting my thoughts drift away. My husband and I did several IUI procedures with injectable medication, and unfortunately were not successful. One ended in miscarriage around 9 weeks. Throughout the failed cycles, and the miscarriage, Chris was there to calm me and reassure me that we would eventually have success. We decided to take a break from the fertility treatments and try on our own for a few months, and Chris started me on a regime of Chinese herbs in addition to the treatments. A few months later, it worked! I am currently almost 20 weeks pregnant with my second child, and all looks good so far. I am thankful to Chris for his guidance throughout my long journey and attribute my success in no small part to him. Everyone at the clinic is wonderful as well. I also saw Jaime a few times for treatments, and she is wonderful and very caring as well. I want to thank them all for helping me! I recommend the Clinic to anyone experiencing fertility troubles without hesitation.

"When I was 36 years old I had my first miscarriage and at 37.5 years old I had my second miscarriage. This was after having a child easily with little trouble at age 34. My OBGYN suggested I see an acupuncturist for stress. So I started because I was desperate to have second child I figured even if it did not help i was certain it could not get worse. I was in a bad place; stressed out but in reality, I was immobilized by the grief. After the miscarriages, I went through 3 IUI (one led to a chemical pregnancy) and 2 full rounds of IVF. None of the procedures led to a viable pregnancy. During this time I would meet with Chris. I grew to appreciate acupuncture and identify its value to my body and mind. Chris and his entire staff were kind and attentive. Each time i was filled with disappointment, i could see they too felt some of my sadness. When I would stop coming because I had given up, they would call and check on me. Not to push appointments but to make sure I was okay. Then when i had given up, i got pregnant on my own with no fertility treatment. I visited Chris frequently and he helped me through the morning sickness and the anguish of anticipation on the first trimester and sciatica discomfort in the latter stages of the third trimester. Now I am 8.5 months pregnant and I lean on Chris and his team as much as I did in the early, more painful stages of this journey. Hands down–these are some of the kindest people on the planet. I recommend Chris for his skill in treatment, but also for his kindness, honestly, and faith in the process. There were many years of pain, stress and a lot of money and hopes invested to try to have a child. I have had endometriosis for many years, couldn’t even talk about it without feeling depressed. Because I was older than 35, my OB-GYN wanted us to begin testing for possible infertility after six months, but we spread it out a little bit longer. After completing blood tests, HSG and semen analysis, nothing indicated why we had not been successful. We decided to do IUI as this was the most “natural” form of insemination. The first round was not successful, so we scheduled a second round for the next cycle. In the meantime, I decided to try acupuncture due to reading other testimonials about the successful outcomes at The Axelrad Clinic. I am not exactly sure how long I met with Chris, but I don’t think it was more than an entire cycle before I got pregnant. I believe that the theory behind acupuncture, treating the whole body, is what was required to get my system in sync. I wanted to share some exciting news with you since you have been a major part of this journey. We are pregnant!! What a blessing!!
Back in April, after 3 failed medicated cycles, recommended that we pursue IVF. In May I went to visit you and you gave me herbs to prepare me for IVF.
Well, to our big surprise, we conceived naturally and I am 9 wks pregnant today! Everything looks good, we have a strong heartbeat, baby is growing and developing and we are praying for the best!

We were shocked and upset when IVF didn’t work the first time. My doctor wanted to make sure I knew about all of my options and referred me to Chris for acupuncture. Chris really focused on my overall wellbeing. He addressed my stress (what stress?!), how well I was (not) sleeping and my (lack of) energy. Chris is highly knowledgeable and very easy to talk to. After all the needle pokes of IVF I wasn’t too thrilled about more needles with acupuncture. That being said, you hardly feel them! It’s now super relaxing and I usually dooze off. I’m happy to say that after 2 rounds of IVF, including 4 embryo transfers, we’re expecting our miracle baby! I’m so grateful for my entire medical team, including Chris and The Axelrad Clinic. I’m so grateful I found this clinic. I originally came in for fertility support after going through a very difficult journey with pregnancy loss and IVF, and from my very first appointment I felt genuinely listened to and cared for.
What I appreciate most is how individualized everything feels. My treatments are tailored to where I am in my cycle and what my body needs at that time, rather than feeling like a one-size-fits-all approach. They’ve also taken the time to talk with me about nutrition, supplements, lifestyle, and things I can realistically incorporate at home.
The acupuncture itself has become something I genuinely look forward to. The environment is calming, I never feel rushed, and I leave feeling incredibly relaxed. I’ve also had gua sha done for my neck and back, which was amazing.
Fertility can be such an overwhelming and clinical experience, especially after loss, so having a place where I feel supported as a whole person has meant a lot to me. I came to the Axelrad clinic for a few issues, mostly stress and fatigue. I can say with full confidence that my energy and stress levels are so much better since starting treatment. I have been going to the Axelrad clinic since I was 28 weeks pregnant. I was having severe SI joint pain in my lower back and nothing was really helping. A coworker recommended acupuncture which I had never done before, but I was willing to try anything at that point. I went and after the first appointment noticed a difference. I absolutely love Axelrad! I have been through 4 rounds of IVF and they are the most accommodating clinic full of the kindest people. The round I am currently in had my lining ant an 3.2 mm on Friday, I had Jaime do accupuncture and took the supplements she recommended, and my lining was up to a 7.3 by Tuesday! I could not imagine going through IVF without them, and they are the first thing/place I recommend to someone starting IVF.

The acupuncture sessions with Xiuming are amazing! It wasn’t my goal but I’ve lost 10 Lb because she had been targeting my digestive system, I won’t go into details but I feel less bloated now. The protocols we use, which have been developed and refined since we first started back in 2004, have several key benefits for those attempting Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET), all of which are supported by reputable scientific sources, including:
Optimal thickness of the uterine lining. Our treatment protocols bring increased blood flow into the uterus, ensuring the lining has everything it needs to grow to its optimal thickness for successful embryo implantation.
Minimizing inflammation and reactivity of the lining. Our treatment protocols minimize inflammation throughout the body and especially in the uterus itself. This allows the delicate and intricate embryo implantation process to progress without the disruptive cellular signals generated by inflammation.
Increased uterine receptivity during transfer. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce the “micro-spasms” of the uterine wall that sometimes occur and can make implantation more difficult for the embryo. The relaxed, calm uterus then calmly accepts the embryo.
Significant reduction of stress and anxiety. While not an absolute block to success, stress and anxiety do make the entire FET process more difficult not only emotionally, but also by generating background cellular signals that can disrupt implantation and uterine receptivity as well as lining development. Acupuncture triggers a deep relaxation response in the body, and that relaxation can last for days and eventually weeks as more treatments are completed. Our patients routinely report to us how the treatments help them in this regard.
How far in advance of my next FET cycle should I start getting treatment?
Our answer to this is already simple: Start where you are. Whether your transfer is tomorrow or 3 months from now, adding acupuncture and a customized supplement plan is going to give you a much better chance of success than NOT adding them, no matter where you are on the timeline.
We’ve had patients who started with us just before transfer who did get pregnant that cycle, although our success rates are lower in these cases, they’re still around 50%!
Our best success rates are with patients who start treatment at least 1 month prior to starting the priming phase of their transfer (when they begin the medicines to grow the lining). The additional prep time is undoubtedly helpful, but don’t let this deter you if you’re planning to undergo transfer soon. Our treatments have immediate impact on increasing blood flow, and reducing stress and inflammatory disruptors.
Do you also offer guidance on supplements?
Yes, we have incorporated supplements into our FET optimization process for close to 20 years, constantly adapting and improving them based on not only the latest research but also our vast clinical experience.
The opportunity to treat well over 1500 FET patients has helped us develop highly effective and EFFICIENT supplement protocols for every situation that negatively affects transfer outcomes, including endometriosis, thin lining, unexplained recurrent miscarriage, clotting disorders, and more.
In fact, in many cases we have been ahead of the curve, using supplements BEFORE they are adopted and put into use by IVF clinics.
Are supplements required as part of your treatment for FET patients?
Absolutely not. It’s 100% up to you and we will always respect your autonomy and will never pressure you to do anything you’re not comfortable with.
Are your supplement protocols cookie cutter or are they customized?
We always customize your supplement protocol based on your specific case. We believe this is one reason for the success we’ve seen with FET where our overall success rate stays consistently above 80%.
Do you sell the supplements or do I have to go get them myself?
We do sell the supplements in the office, and you are encouraged (but not required) to get them from us because they are the exact products we have used for almost two decades and we know they work as advertised.
Unfortunately, in the world of supplements there are wide variations in quality and formulation that mean not all brands / products have equivalent potency simply because they claim to have the same ingredients. The reason we know this is that when patients DO choose to use other products they often (but of course not always) see results that are below what we would expect with the products we carry.
Again, this is completely up to you, and we always respect your choice in the matter.
How do you know which supplements I need?
At your intake, we review your completed medical history forms in detail and interview you to dig deeper so we can determine where your body needs extra support. We also take into account your diagnosis and pre-IVF test results, especially AMH and FSH, which in many ways indicate the overall health of your ovaries.
Because of our extensive experience in IVF optimization, we no longer require patients to get additional testing outside of what they have already done with the fertility clinic. However, if you would like us to order any of these tests, we can facilitate that and we are able to assess the results for you. We have found, however, that the tests almost never reveal anything we aren’t already addressing with the treatment plan.
What are your credentials / licenses?
All our clinicians are Board Certified by the NCCAOM (National Certification Commission for Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine) and are licensed by the State Board of Acupuncture Examiners and Texas State Medical Board.
Additionally, all our clinicians have specialized training in Functional Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine via the 5-Element Functional Medicine Institute which was founded by our Director, Chris Axelrad, M.S.O.M., L.Ac.
Chris Axelrad also served for 4 years on the Executive Board of ABORM (The American and TCM Board of Reproductive Medicine), including 2 years as its president.
Do you accept insurance?
We are out of network and therefore do not directly bill insurance.
However, many of our patients easily receive reimbursement from their insurance on an out-of-network basis by filing directly with their insurance company. Upon request, we will gladly provide you with the documentation you need in order to do that.
Do you offer lab testing?
We can definitely help you get whatever lab tests you’re interested in.
However, we typically don’t need many tests, if any, and the ones we do use are fairly standard.
We have found through experience that by using the 5-Element Functional Medicine process developed by our Founder and Director, and focusing on simple, subtle symptomatic diagnostic parameters, we end up with incredibly accurate assessments and treatment plans.
It’s important to remember that your body knows how to fix itself and get itself back into balance. Our process is very precise and efficient at doing that. For instance, many of our patients who are on thyroid replacement end up needing less or can even stop their medicine after a period of time on their treatment plan. This is because not only is the thyroid now producing hormones more efficiently, the cells are also responding to the thyroid more effectively.

We have 4 offices in the Greater Houston area, and a worldwide office on the internet. 😉
Is there a problem if I'm on medication or doing other conventional medical procedures?
Absolutely not. We are always here to support YOUR goals and YOUR decisions. If you choose to take medications prescribed by another doctor, we respect that choice. Same with the choice to do surgery, IVF, or any other conventional medical procedure.
Our goal is to help you be successful, no matter what YOU decide to do outside of our office (short of harming others or yourself, of course 😉 ).
How long are the office visits?
Your initial consultation usually takes no more than 15 minutes, with a brief “orientation” at the end where we’ll make sure you’re clear on everything before you set up your intake.
The total time for that appointment is about 30 minutes.
The intake appointment is roughly 60 – 75 minutes in length, including 25 minutes for the acupuncture treatment and about 15 minutes at the end to go over your treatment plan and book out some future appointments (we’re very busy so we always encourage you book at least a month in advance to be sure you get the days / times you want).
The follow-ups are typically around 35 – 45 minutes each, again with 25 minutes allocated to the treatment and the rest for consultation and check-out.
